Program Philosophy

Tomah VA Psychiatric Pharmacy Residency aspires to graduate residents whose excellent clinical skills are matched by their dedication to advocacy, inter-professional collaboration, and engagement in the profession. Not only will graduates be prepared for board certification in psychiatric pharmacy, but they will be adept at psychiatric pharmacy practice expansion. Our precepting team will inspire graduates to pursue fulfilling careers with a focus on work-life balance for personal growth.

Site Special Features

The Tomah VA has been home to significant psychiatric pharmacy service growth over the past 5 years. Our residency program is committed to training residents on the skills necessary to advance pharmacy practice, collaborate with interdisciplinary teams, and practice at the top of our scope. All MH and pain pharmacists have their DEA license to prescribe controlled substances, including buprenorphine for opioid use disorder or pain management. Several preceptors are involved in leadership and committee positions that will demonstrate the value of engagement and advocacy for the profession. Residents will have opportunities to participate in the function of these roles, such as Associate Chief of Pharmacy, Pharmacy and Therapeutics committee (P&T), Suicide Risk and Prevention Committee (SRPC), Psychotropic Drug Safety Initiative (PDSI), Substance Use Disorder Program Director, and Pain Management Opioid Safety and PDMP (PMOP) Coordinator.
The Tomah VA is also a flagship site for Whole Health initiatives which are integrated into the mental health and pain management services. This provides an opportunity to learn about non-pharmacologic treatment of various disease states, including pharmacist-administered battlefield acupuncture (BFA), or auricular acupuncture. Tomah VA is located in rural Wisconsin, providing opportunity to learn about the unique challenges of rural populations and the importance of using telehealth modalities to increase access to care.
We value the unique qualities and perspectives that all of our preceptors and future residents bring together in improving and diversifying our workplace. By maximizing each individual’s strengths, we hope to foster significant personal and professional growth that will benefit our patients. The PGY2 resident will be encouraged to pursue personal and professional development through opportunities such as a teaching certificate, mentorship, administration experience, preceptorship, interdisciplinary learning, and advocacy. We look forward to residents that will bring their original ideas to our new program.
