• PGY2 Other Features: Residents have the opportunity to present at least two lectures to psychiatry residents at the University of Missouri Psychiatric Center and may also present a continuing education program at the Truman VA Hospital. Additional teaching opportunities include weekly psychopharmacology lectures and leading case discussions with psychiatry residents, nurse practitioners, psychology interns, physician assistant students, medical students, and pharmacy students. Affiliations with several colleges of pharmacy also provide numerous opportunities to precept APPE pharmacy students.

Program Philosophy

To provide a dynamic learning environment that prepares residents for clinical practice across diverse psychiatric settings, fostering the competencies necessary for board certification. Residents develop a deep understanding of the importance of building and maintaining positive, professional relationships while delivering evidence-based, patient-centered care.

Site Special Features

In affiliation with the University of Missouri Psychiatric Center and the Harry S. Truman VA Hospital, the residency offers diverse clinical experiences in forensic psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, consultation-liaison and ambulatory psychiatry, long-term and acute inpatient psychiatry, geriatrics, developmental disabilities, pain management, administration, and research. Residents actively participate in the Incompetent to Stand Trial (IST) Committee and the State Psychopharmacology Committee, which together provide valuable opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration, case review, and contributions to complex treatment planning. They also engage with the hospital’s Research Committee, attending weekly meetings to discuss their residency project and related scholarly activities. In addition, residents have the opportunity for a longitudinal learning experience that develops the skills needed to implement and manage a clozapine clinic and pharmacy-managed laboratory for hematology monitoring of clozapine-treated patients. This experience covers both the clinical and operational aspects of managing a clozapine program, and upon completion, residents will meet CLIA qualifications to serve as a director or technical consultant for a moderate complexity laboratory.
